about

I'm dedicating this album to my late Father; Nicola Carmeno Abela 1940 - 2015, a Maltese / Greek immigrant from Egypt (both his father’s [Maltese side] and mother’s [Greek side] families lived in Cairo for at least two generations. They left Egypt after the coup d'état ousting King Farouk in 1952 and settled on Johnston St in Collingwood the following year (I wonder what they would make of it now) where the family of five shared a house with some other immigrant families. It was here dad became an apprentice electrician at the age of 12 before becoming a builder and then a publican [some of you may even remember where I grew up at Nicabela’s in Malvern which was a live music venue] before maláka bankers took him for everything during the recession we had to have [incidentally my final year of high school and around the time cover photo was taken]. Even though he was never late on a payment they used the fine print to destroy his life’s work, essentially old money doing what it does best, stealing a successful business because they could without a shred of remorse. Anyway, now I have my own family I appreciate what Dad did for us more now than I did when he was alive and decided thematically use all the Greek words, he incidentally taught us while being chastised (and some nicer ones from Nanna) as the track titles. As although Abela is a Maltese name, Nanna was the matriarch of the family and so by default culturally we pretty much grew up Greek.

I did these recordings last month and some of you may have watched me record part of the title track ‘Kako paitho’ during my Instagram live on the 28th June. As always, I took a breath before listening back yesterday and was happy enough with the results I decided to publish them all. Each track as always is an in time unedited improvisation of me playing glass through my modular rig, no overdubs, no synthesis, no sequencing, no looping (just delay).
